children's home society - Mentors Opening Doors Enriching Lives (MODEL) program

Childrens Home SocietyOver 1.5 million children in the United States have a parent serving a sentence in a state or federal prison. Most of this increasing population lives in poor neighborhoods, where their particular needs compound the pressure on families and cities already struggling with violence, discrimination, social instability and poverty.

With over 2,000 children in North Central Florida with parents incarcerated, Children’s Home Society of Florida (CHS) established the Mentors Opening Doors Enriching Lives  (MODEL) program in 2005. CHS provides one-to-one community-based mentors for children who have a parent incarcerated in a federal or state prison. Each youth is matched with a trained mentor who can provide leadership and encouragement to help direct a child toward a positive path in life.

Youth Eligibility
The MODEL Program serves children ages 4-17 residing in the Big Bend region who have a parent incarcerated in any state or federal prison. Children with incarcerated parents suffer significantly from a situation over which they had no control. They have often lost a caregiver, a role model and a loved one to the prison system. A mentor is not there to take the role of a parent or provider but to be a friend for that child, to listen and to talk each week, and research shows that youth involved in mentoring programs do better in school, are less likely to engage in high-risk activities, and have improved family and social relationships. The MODEL program has one of the shortest waiting lists amongst youth mentoring program in this region, and is accepting Youth Referrals from all sources - including caseworkers, teachers, family, friends. Youth Referrals can be completed online at http://tinyurl.com/MODELyouth

Mentor Qualifications
Mentors are trained adult volunteers from our community, at least 21 years of age, who have completed a stringent application process. They submit a written application, and MODEL Program staff check multiple references and conduct a personal interview with each candidate. Mentors are also required to pass a fingerprint-based background check and must have a clean driving record. More information about becoming a mentor is also available online: http://tinyurl.com/CHSmentors

If you have any questions or would like to refer a youth or mentor to the MODEL program please contact Amy.Taylor@chsfl.org or Louise.Bradshaw@chsfl.org, or call 850-921-0772.
