Hotel Duval continually strives to make environmentally responsible decisions
and encourages the participation of its employees, guests and affiliates,
by empowering them to make the right choices.
In partnership with the Florida Green Lodging Program, Hotel Duval is implementing the following
programs:
Communication:
- 1. A new ICE In-Room Concierge system provides an interactive display of information and
services via a high-efficiency touch screen in each guest room. ICE In-Room Concierge will give
Hotel Duval’s guests the ability to make restaurant reservations, schedule spa appointments,
place room service orders, search for details about local attractions and vendors, all from the
convenience of their room. ICE will also inform guests about Hotel Duval’s environmental policy,
encourage them to participate in our many environmental initiatives, and provide feedback on
our sustainability practices.
Water Conservation:
- 1. A linen and towel reuse program for all guest rooms that will reduce water usage and energy consumption.
- 2. New, low flow dual-flush toilets have been added to each guest room.
Energy Efficiency
- 1. Programmable Thermostats and Energy Management Systems (EMS) have been installed in every guest room to regulate the energy consumption of both occupied and unoccupied rooms.
- 2. New elevators have been installed with high efficiency cabling and controllers.
- 3. New tinted, windows in the lobby will reduce the amount of energy used for cooling.
- 4. New, high efficiency PTAC air conditioning units have been built into all guest rooms to improve air quality and lower energy consumption.
Waste Reduction
- 1. A Recycling Program for office paper, newspapers, plastic bottles, glass containers, and aluminum or tin containers is available in each guest room.
- 2. ICE In‐Room Concierge will electronically communicate information to the guests of each room and will eliminate the need for traditional printed information pieces such as a Guest Services Directory, brochures, and placards. The information on ICE In‐Room Concierge can be updated in real time which will reduce the waste associated with the need for quarterly print revisions.
- 3. A Lease vs. Buy program is in effect for our high efficiency dishwasher and numerous pieces of office equipment.
- 4. Reusable microfiber cloths allow us to clean mirrors and windows without the waste of paper towels.
- 5. Gently used goods that are being replaced, are donated to the Florida State University’s Entrepreneurship Boot Camp for Veterans with Disabilities Program, or to the Big Bend Goodwill, rather than being thrown away and sent to the landfill.
- 6. All of Hotel Duval’s cleaning chemicals are Green Seal certified which helps protect our air quality, as well as our local drinking water.
In the Future
- 1. We will partner with the City of Tallahassee’s biodiesel initiative which allows donations of used cooking oil to be converted to used for biodiesel fuel in the city’s fleet vehicles.
- 2. Documents such as employee manuals, training materials, benefits packages, and daily reports will become available primarily in electronic format. This will greatly reduce paper waste and will reaffirm Hotel Duval’s commitment to sustainable business practices.
- 3. We will continue to replace low efficiency incandescent and LED bulbs with
compact fluorescent lamps where possible.
